“Sustainability in business is a must”

9th January, 2019

by Andrew James

“Sustainability in business is a must going forward” was the message from our Truro office breakfast briefing.

It was a full house for the first of the Truro office’s breakfast briefings of the year.  The theme of the event was “why embedding a ‘low carbon’ ethos in your business makes good financial sense (and the assistance that is available in Cornwall).

We opened proceedings with Richard Wadman (who was once described as a “tree hugging socialist”) outlining some of the reasons why he felt that businesses would increasingly put ‘sustainability’ at the core of their strategy. These comments and more, were echoed in later conversations during the event.

The main presentations were delivered by Alex Nicholas (Cornwall New Energy) and Dr Dave Rymer (Tevi), who spoke about the ERDF funded projects that they were engaged with and gave examples of the projects they had worked with. We have blogged on these projects previously, and we will be looking to share details of the events they are hosting over the next few months in due course.

The question and answer session that followed was one of the longest and most interesting/ thought provoking that we have had.

One of the key action points arising was to create and make people aware of a platform/ platforms for “case studies” to be shared -examples of businesses who invested in renewable technology and the payback period and other benefits (marketing collateral) that they have gained from that investment.  Likewise, for businesses who are embracing the circular economy, we have a great example in our recent edition of ‘YOUR FC’.

This is not the first event we have hosted on this theme and it will not be last.  In general, the vibe in the room was that now is the time to take action and for those businesses who have put “sustainability” on the “nice to do” list, there is increasing amount of evidence to support the commercial evidence to move this to the “must do” list.

Thank you as always to the presenters and the admin team who make these events possible including Linda, Carole and Devon.

Slides from the event can be found here.
