I was pleased to host the first of what I hope will be a series of 12 monthly breakfast briefings last week.
Debt finance – the market
The theme of this one was ‘debt finance – the market’ and featured presentations from Mike Cass of Capitalise and John Sharpe of Thin Cats. The inspiration / motivation behind the theme was the same combination of statistics that are used in Capitalise presentation materials:
- 94% of businesses do not know there are independent and alternative
financing options available beyond the high street (the Guardian Online 2014)
- There are over 360 lenders focused entirely on SME lending
I am sure the percentage of businesses that are unaware of the alternative finance options has dropped significantly since 2014 due to the efforts of the British Business Bank; some high profile alternative lenders such as Funding Circle and initiatives such as the Bank Referral Scheme.
However, it remains a relevant issue that a business looking for finance should be aware of the options available and be looking for a match in terms of their requirements and the finance providers.
A copy of the presenters’ slides can be found here – Breakfast Briefing – Debt Finance – The Market – August 2018
It is well worth having a flick through the presentations to:
- Get a feel for the range of debt solutions in the market demonstrated in the Capitalise presentation in some infographics
- Look at the ethos, lending criteria and requirements of one of the alternative lenders – Thin Cats
- Have a read of some case studies of businesses who used Capitalise or Thin Cats
- Be reminded that in addition to debt, there are sources of equity, grant and rewards (which may in some cases be a better match with your business’ requirements – see further below)
(Admittedly, my slides are more visual than self-explanatory but if you have any questions please contact me).
A big thank you to the two external presenters Mike, who travelled down from London, and John who kindly filled a SWIG shaped hole at very late notice).
Thanks also to Lucinda from our Business Recovery team who spoke for a few minutes on Escalate – a debt recovery solution that certainly prompted a level of interest and questions among attendees.
I am super-excited about our next breakfast briefing which is aimed at businesses in one of our sector specialisms – Food and Drink. This one has a lot to live up to as last September’s Food and Drink breakfast briefing was described as our “best breakfast event”. The focus is on funding – specifically crowd funding. We have lined up a speaker from Crowdfunder and they will be joined by a speaker from Stephens Scown – and we hope to have one more external speaker as well. Details of the event can be found here.
On the subject of food, I have organised a ‘BBQ Mountain biking & networking event’ on 24 August 2018 at Cardinham Woods (near Bodmin). No previous mountain biking experience is required and there is a rumour that Charlotte Green is attending…. She is the world’s number one female BMX racer! If you would like more details, please contact me.
