Keeping our academies open over the school holidays for critical workers – additional funding is available

The government acknowledges the work that schools are undertaking to support the children of critical workers, vulnerable children and all those pupils at home.

The government has confirmed that academies will continue to receive their core funding through the General Annual Grant until at least August 2021 regardless of school closures.  Therefore academies can be confident that staffing and other regular costs can be met.

In addition, where academies remain open and face additional costs as a result of Coronavirus, further funding will also be available.  The funding is intended to cover specific areas where schools face additional costs due to Coronavirus, such as:

  • Increased premises related costs (such as additional costs for keeping the school open over the holidays)
  • Support for free school means for eligible children who are not attending school (where not covered by the national voucher scheme)
  • Additional cleaning due to confirmed or suspected cases of Coronavirus

However the guidance is clear that funding should only be claimed if:

  • The costs can’t be met from existing resources and would require a drawdown of reserves, undermining the long-term financial sustainability of the academy
  • The academy is anticipating that it will not be adding to its reserves in 2020/21

At the moment the additional costs should be paid normally from existing budgets, however further guidance will be published in June on how to claim the additional funds which will be paid directly to the academy, subject to maximum limits of between £25,000 and £75,000 depending on the number of pupils in the school.

Further detail on the funding can be found here.
