Finance in Cornwall- Finding the right funding for business

23rd March, 2018

PKF Francis Clark’s Finance in Cornwall event takes place on 18 April 2018 at the Burrell Theatre, Truro. The event takes place in Cornwall Business Week with one of other main events, the Cornwall Chamber’s Business Fair, also being held at the Truro school campus.

These events are very timely given the recent research by Liberis which saw 62 percent of UK SMEs saying they needed funding to grow and expand, but with 57 percent of SMEs being unsure which provider to obtain funding from.

Finance in Cornwall will feature presentations from sources of grant, debt and equity funding, as well as business support agencies operating in the region. There will be a total of 18 short and sharp presentations, each giving delegates a basis for an assessment of which funding stream/funder matches their requirements. After the presentations there will be the opportunity for delegates to meet the presenters and ask one to one questions.

2017 saw an increase in equity funding to SMEs and the event features a number of presenters on this type of finance from Mylor Ventures Business Angel network to private equity firm, Connection Capital. Alternative Lenders are also well represented with locally based lender SWIG Finance and the inclusion of peer to peer lenders, Folk to Folk and Funding Circle. Capitalise a platform providing access to over 100 alternative lenders will also be in attendance.

PKF Francis Clark’s Andrew James, part of the team organising the event said:

”Through the course of my work I interact with a number of sources of/ routes to funding for business as well as a number of the business support agencies operating in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. I am pleased they have agreed to join me at the event which will provide vital information on finding the right funding for businesses.”

Matthew Bourne, from the Growth Hub commented:

“We are acutely aware that it can seem like a minefield or maze of funding options out there to the business owner. This event is a great way of disseminating information to assist in the navigation of the maze but also to show that there is assistance out there. Grant funding will be covered through presentations from Cornwall Development Company (CDC) and the Rural Payments Agency who will be stressing that a number of the funds are closing soon.”

Rob Misselbrook of Private Equity Firm, Mylor Ventures went on to say:

“The work I have been doing with Cornwall Chamber and professionals in the region has shown there is an appetite for equity amongst the companies based in Cornwall. And we are the verge of a game changing development in this area with the launch of the The Cornwall Fund – an update on which will I am sure be given at the event.”

Michael Cass from Capitalise added:

“There are over 360 lenders focused entirely on SME lending, and the options for businesses are endless. We will be talking to delegates about how they can get the best possible result for their business.”
