Ultra runner Jason leads by example

Accountancy firm legal expert Jason Mitchell swapped his office attire for running shoes as he completed the extreme, 100-mile Cornish coastal endurance race ARC of Attrition.

Jason, Partner at south west chartered accountants and business advisers PKF Francis Clark’s Truro office, is no stranger to ultra-running.

He narrowly failed to complete the 2019 ARC, from Coverack to Porthtowan, and so was doubly determined to succeed this year.

The gruelling ARC – which is run on undulating terrain with plenty of mud, boulders and cliff edges – goes through the night whatever the weather.

Jason, who completed the UK’s toughest winter ultra in just over 34 hours, overcame fatigue, severe stomach cramps and hallucinations to finish in a creditable 100th place.

And he is leading by example as colleagues in his office strive to maintain a good level of fitness.

He said: “For me finishing the ARC was more than just an ultra-run, it was a journey of self-belief, achieving something I once thought impossible.

“It is about overcoming obstacles put in your way, knowing that failure is one of life’s greatest development tools and I grabbed it with both hands to learn everything I could from 2019’s event.

“I’m no major athlete, but I’m a strong believer that if you work hard and focus on your goals, when you fully put your mind to it you can achieve great things.

“My mind and determination allows me to push through the physical barriers of long distance running.

“I also know that great achievements usually have someone else behind them. The ARC Angels, the medics, organisers MudCrew’s team, my superb crew, supporters and my family, all of whom got me to that finish line.”

Chartered accountant Jason, who joined the PKF Francis Clark legal team in 2002, specialises in providing accountancy and advisory services to a wide range of law firms and owner managed businesses.

PKF Francis Clark’s Truro office is particularly keen on keeping fit with nearly two thirds of the 100 staff there taking part in physical activities centred on the workplace.

It’s part of a firm-wide Health & Wellbeing programme which encourages all staff to be more physically active as it is a proven way of improving mental wellbeing.

Colleagues at the office, previously named ‘healthy workplace of the year’ by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, participate in running, cycling, walking and sports events.

PKF Francis Clark is also sponsoring the new Mental Health Ultra 100 run in Cornwall on Saturday, March 21, an event that aims to stamp on the stigma attached to mental health issues.

Organised by Newquay Sports & Community Centre, the coastline-based event – over 100km, 50km, 20km of 5km distances – also raises funds for mental health programmes in Cornwall.
